Back to Community Profiles - Adam Odwar from Uganda

Z. Adam Odwar, a citizen of both Uganda and Canada, was born and raised in Africa. He is a well-traveled man, educated in Business Administration, Commerce and Finance in Uganda, India, the United Kingdom and Canada. He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration, which he received in 2005, as well as a BSc in Accounting from Thornhill. He is also a graduate of Algonquin College’s Financial Management/CGA program. His experience includes working both in private and public sectors. Before immigrating to Canada, he worked in different capacities in private and public sectors in Uganda, which lies in East Africa. He worked as Income Controller for Sheraton International Hotel Corporation, a five-star hotel in Kampala. In Uganda, he also worked as a Cost and Management Accountant in Uganda Spinning Mills Ltd Lira; a specified company under National Textiles Board. As a former researcher and analyst, Mr. Odwar worked for the Minister of Finance in Uganda in the early 1980s. He is keen on entrepreneurship development as engine of growth and job creation in the community.
Adam OdwarMr. Odwar is the current Executive Director of the Secretariat for African Trade Development and Internet Services (SATDIS); a Canadian not for profit non-governmental organization (NGO) situated in Ottawa. He is also a member of Leadership Ottawa. In 2000, he chaired a Committee on Business and Commerce instituted by the Canadian African Dialogue. He initiated, developed and delivered a successful three years pilot study involving African Canadian Youth in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and their mentors. As a founder member of the Canadian Council on Africa and the former Director on the Council’s Board from 2002 – 2006, he strongly believes in African development through private sector initiatives.
Mr. Odwar is keen on New Technology and International Business Development. His activities are centered on Internet technology, community development and youth services; all contributing to creating business opportunities and capacity building. Married with eight children, Mr. Odwar is a consultant on African issues, and has exemplary strength in networking development with contacts in sub-Saharan Africa.
