The Bedouin Story

This lesson is based on the portion of the expedition in Egypt.  The expedition team will have the opportunity to travel with the Bedouin throughout the desert and will share their experiences via the expedition website (http://www.algonquincollege.com/africa)

HSP3M (CHW3M and SBI4U) Physical Anthropology

Students will learn

  • to understand and apply various social science research methods ( interview, case study, data analysis, questionnaire, survey etc.)
  • to comprehend the similarities and differences between humans and primates
  • to understand the concept of evolution of humans through the use of physical anthropology by focussing on the Donald Johanson  discovery of Lucy
  • to understand and apply the concepts related to cultural anthropology (culture, subculture, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism etc.)
  • to develop quality interview questions to use in an interview with an archaeologist at a dig in  the Down Rift Valley

Introduction to Anthropology, psychology and sociology Social Organization Unit, Apartheid in Canada and Africa

Students will learn

  • to articulate their beliefs about racial differences and discrimination
  • to define Apartheid and its significance as a social organization
  • describe the link between racist beliefs and actions using historical examples
  • define institutional racism and provide examples of how it is supported through economic, political, social, and cultural means
  • provide examples of positive actions to combat racial discrimination at the individual, community, and international levels

International Assistance and NGOs: Storefront – Profiling the Work of NGOs

Students share existing knowledge about NGOs, and learn about their formation and the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.  Students select one NGO and gather information about the work of that organization; then they create a formal display to present in a storefront.  Students decide which NGOs will receive their donations and justify their decisions.
