Introduction to Business, Entrepreneurship & Franchise Activity

By completing this set of activities, students will determine

• if owning a franchise is something you are suited for ?  Take a quiz to determine this. 
• How to investigate whether a franchise is a viable business opportunity or not
• If owning a cell phone franchise in a disadvantaged community in Africa is anything like owning a franchise in Canada or the U.S. ?
• If there are cellular phone franchise success stories in disadvantaged areas in Africa.

Introduction to Business, Accounting Activity

By completing this set of activities, students will be introduced to accounting procedures including preparation of balance sheets and income statements.  Accounting software or spreadsheets can be used.

The following lesson plan will help students identify and answer the following questions:

- Is having a cell phone in Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, South Africa a need or want?
- What are cell phones being used for in the four countries- rural and urban?
- Is one (urban / rural) predominant?
- What media advertising will Africans see?
- What are they exposed to?
- How does it(media) [cell phone use] differ between the four countries?
- How does it differ between Rural and Urban?

Students will:

- Anticipate growth potential for large markets;
- Understand the determination of business size based on growth projections;
- Identify what kind of services to offer and where to locate business.

Students graph data about international assistance and analyze the trends.  Students read about acceptable levels of donations, and assess Canada’s giving.  Students consider our nation’s spending and justify any reallocation of funds.
