Shade Grown Coffee
Algonquin College has partnered with a group of farmers in Csta Rica who are committed to sustainable agricultural development. Shade grown coffee while more expensive to manage than monoculture operations does much to preserve biodiversity and to protect the soil from erosion. This method of coffee production is however a much more expensive operation to run. Through a direct trade partnership, Algonquin can now purchase coffee directly from the farmers. This provides them with a much better price for their coffee allowing them to continue cultivating their crops under the canopy of a rich and diverse ecosystem.
